I. Main functional differences
1. Forged steel gate valve Completely opens and closes the pipeline by vertical movement of the valve, designed solely for complete opening or closing, flow adjustment is not possible. The medium flows in both directions, the hydraulic resistance is minimal.
2. Forged steel shut-off valve Regulates the flow of the medium by moving the disk, allows you to shut off the flow, throttle and regulate the flow. The hydraulic resistance is quite high, the flow of the medium is one-way. The valve body is marked with the direction of flow; reverse installation is prohibited.
3. Forged steel check valve An automatic valve that opens and closes itself under the influence of pressure and flow direction of the medium. The main purpose is to prevent the reverse flow of the medium; manual opening/closing and flow adjustment are not provided.
II. Comparison of design and performance characteristics
1. Hydraulic resistance
◆ Gate valve: minimal resistance, unhindered transportation of the medium through the pipeline
◆ Shut-off valve: high resistance, noticeable pressure loss
◆ Check valve: medium resistance when fully open
2. Control method
◆ Gate and shut-off valve: manual/electric/pneumatic control to open and close as required
◆ Check valve: fully automatic operation, no manual intervention required
3. Tightness and possibility of throttling
◆ Valve: excellent tightness with full shutoff; throttling in the half-open position is prohibited - prolonged operation in this mode leads to wear and leaks
◆ Shut-off valve: reliable tightness, suitable for throttling and flow regulation, ideal for control modes
◆ Check valve: main purpose – protection against backflow; tightness depends on the type of structure
4. Direction of medium flow
◆ Valve: two-way flow, no restrictions on installation direction
◆ Shut-off valve: one-way flow, installation strictly according to the arrow on the valve body
◆ Non-return valve: allows the medium to flow in one direction, and automatically closes when flow is reversed
III. Applications and selection rules
(1) Forged steel gate valve - applications
Suitable for: long-distance main pipelines, energy facilities, petrochemicals, warm water steam, oil and gas pipelines; For high flow applications where minimal pressure loss is important, only full opening or closing is required. Operating requirements: Use exclusively in fully open or fully closed position; Long-term operation in a half-open state to adjust flow is prohibited.
(2) Forged steel shut-off valve - applications
Suitable for: equipment branches, process pipelines, steam lines, pipelines with frequent shut-off, throttling and fine flow control; modes with the need to adjust flow and pressure. Requirements for operation: installation strictly in the direction of flow on the housing, reverse installation is not permitted.
(3) Forged steel check valve - applications
Suitable for: pump outlets, compressor piping, tank inlets and outlets, branch pipes and other areas where backflow prevention is required to protect equipment; Prevents damage to pipelines and upstream equipment from backflow impacts. Operational requirements: select the design depending on the medium in the pipeline, operating pressure and installation position (horizontal / vertical) to guarantee smooth opening and closing.
IV. Quick valve selection
1. Only full opening/closing is required, high flow, low hydraulic resistance → select a valve
2. You need to shut off the flow plus throttle/regulate the flow → select a shut-off valve
3. It is necessary to prevent backflow and protect the equipment → select a check valve
